An open competition for foreign architects has been launched in Russia for the development of a new science and technology museum in the Siberian city of Tomsk.

The competition, organised by the Russian Union of Architects and Tomsk State Architectural University, is part of a major local government project to boost tourism, with plans to include a new university campus, pedestrianised zones, and other creative and recreational spaces as part of the new site.

It is hoped that the Tomsk Embankment complex will become an important hub in Siberia for contemporary science, culture and education, with a focus on developing research skills and a commitment to innovation among the city’s inhabitants.

The jury, which includes Russia’s national architect Vladilen Krasilnikov, Tomsk’s first deputy mayor Yevgeny Parshuto and representatives from the Ministry of Culture, will select applicants for the shortlist between 20 August and 21 October. The shortlist of five architects will be offered contracts to develop the architectural and urban concept of the museum with a budget of one million roubles ($29,000) each.
