Hailing from Chechnya, Aslan Gaisumov's object-based practice is an attempt to find an intuitive and poetic language to make sense of the conflicts of the last two decades that have scarred his homeland. In Untitled (The War) (2011), which was exhibited at the 3rd Moscow International Biennale for Young Art in 2012, Gaisumov illustrates the impossibility of describing through language the experience of the Chechen war. Dog-eared books, some with their spines or pages ripped out, others destroyed by nails or wires, are transformed into silent witnesses to cruel happenings beyond their control.
