Arseniy Zhilyaev is an artist, curator, writer and political activist whose work explores the relationship between art and social production, in particular the labour conditions of creative workers. For Zhilyaev, pedagogy is one of the key ways of instigating political change. This is reflected in his practice whose tool-kit includes the Russian revolutionary avant-garde, Marxist theory and Sartre’s philosophical writings as possible methodologies for transmitting ideas and knowledge. A consideration of the museum’s role as within culture and society formed the backbone of the artist’s recent solo exhibition at Kadist Art Foundation in Paris.
