Little Otik

Combining stop-motion animation and live-action drama, acclaimed animator Jan Svankmajer’s hilariously creepy Little Otik brings K. J. Erben’s bizarre Czech folk tale, Otesanek to life. The 2000 film, told through the eyes of a precocious young girl, tells the tale of an infertile couple who resort to adopting a tree stump that resembles a baby. They name him Otik, but when their wooden progeny develops a craving for human flesh their love for him is tested. Little Otik is a delightfully wicked exploration of the maternal instinct that peels away at a nation’s sexual subconscious whilst also touching on the mindless consumerism of middle-class culture.
