In 2012 it was estimated that the Bulgarian capital of Sofia had only thirteen operational ambulances, despite boasting a population of over two million. A stark and unforgiving observational documentary Sofia’s Last Ambulance presents the viewer with a passenger-seat-view of the daily grind endured by three in-demand ambulance crewmembers. This study of a broken system prevailing against insurmountable financial and political odds is an exhausting yet often heartening experience. However, when the camera begins rolling one morning only to reveal one of the chairs empty, what begins as a jovial film about Sofia's courageous and dedicated healthcare workers soon evolves into a hopeless hymn for a seemingly incurable metropolis.
