Gela Babluani found himself thrown into the spotlight when his debut 13 Tzameti won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance. The film achieved instantaneous cult status thanks to its employment of Russian roulette as a vivid metaphor for the corruptible influence of capitalism. His follow-up about a naive French woman who travels to Georgia to inherit a castle is far more nuanced in its criticism of the west, adopting the unwitting gaze of a group of French tourists in an attempt to scrutinise the dominant western perspective of the Caucasus as an area consumed by violence.
