International Women’s Day, celebrated on 8 March, remains a big thing in former socialist countries due to its political foundations: it was introduced in 1909 by the Socialist Party of America to celebrate the contribution of working women in society.


Despite the forward-thinking Soviet idea of a woman as a working comrade, patriarchy and conventional gender roles still hold sway in the post-Soviet world, where creative women have to fight against bias, discrimination and inequality.


The Calvert Journal is proud to provide a platform for these cutting-edge female creators — hoping that someday, in an equal world, we wouldn’t need a special day to celebrate their achievements.
