Aikaterini Gegisian

Displacement, territory, resilience and reconciliation are the focus of this year’s Armenian pavilion. Aikaterini Gegisian sourced photographs from the 1960s to the 1980s that, when collaged together, create a composite place. In one image the Athenian cityscape, dominated by the Parthenon, extends seamlessly out into Istanbul on one side, and onto the Yerevan skyscrapers on the other. Within this heterogeneity, Armenity emerges, the pavilion’s theme. Like Gegisian's images, Armenity posits a new landscape which questions territorial boundaries and envisions how such a place could exist in memory or in imagination.
