A hand tentatively grips a pencil, struggling to contain its own disobedient shaking as it writes “Tranquility”. The hand is anything but calm, struggling with symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Damir Ocko’s work at the Croatian Pavilion explores calm and tension within the human body. In another scene, unclothed bodies shiver involuntarily against the unwavering stillness of the frozen landscape that acts upon them. These moments — when pressure is exerted from the outside (shivering) or from within (the writing hand) — reveal the body as both a fragile and perseverant subject.
