Ivan Grubanov has long collected flags of regions, countries and territories that no longer exist or have changed form. These “dead flags” are on display at the Serbian Pavilion. Each flag was coated in chemicals, to be fused into paintings and installations. The exhibition includes flags of his native country, the former Yugoslavia, as well as those belonging to the Communist Party, and flags of long-gone republics and provinces. These insignia are reminders of the presence, disappearance and persistence of these much-altered symbols. With his work, Grubanov demands we consider the afterlife of power.
