Polish entrepreneur launches new contemporary art hub in the Swiss Alps

Polish entrepreneur Grażyna Kulczyk has announced the launch of a new contemporary art centre nestled deep in the heart of the Swiss Alps.

Built in the remains of a 12th century monastery in the remote mountain village of Susch, the hub — called the Muzeum Susch — will host some 16,000 square feet of gallery space, with areas for exhibitions, experiential installations, performances, lectures and a residency programme.

Funded completely by Kulczyk herself, the centre will also put a special emphasis on supporting women and New East artists, describing eastern European art as “still underrepresented in reunited Europe”.

Muzeum Susch will open its doors on 2 January 2019 with an exhibition organised by Kasia Redzisz, a senior curator at Tate Liverpool. Much of the show will draw on Kulczyk’s own extensive collection, as well as site-specific commissions and temporary exhibitions. Polish artist Monika Sosnowska has already been commissioned to create a new sculpture for the museum, stretching the entire height of the building.
