NATO wants you to battle fake news with its new Facebook game

NATO has unveiled a new “indie game” to battle fake news using the power of Facebook.

Launched by the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence in Riga, The News Hero app trains users to choose trustworthy reports for their own self-published newspaper.

Accurate stories are rewarded with a growing readership and more virtual cash to spend on office upgrades.

NATO say they want to game to boost readers’ “resilience against disinformation”. “[It] hopes to burst the bubble of an elite dominated discussion about critical thinking and empower society,” the Strategic Communications Centre said in an official press release.

The game is currently only available on Facebook and is open to all users here.
