The Lithuanian capital of Vilnius is reinventing itself as Europe’s sexiest travel destination with a new ad campaign comparing the city to the elusive G-spot.
Aimed at young travellers aged 18 — 35, the ad hopes to play with Vilnius’ reputation as an “undiscovered gem.” The ad, which shows a young woman grasping a Europe-patterned bed sheet, uses the text, “Vilnius: Nobody knows where it is, but when you find it – it’s amazing.”
Few people know where Vilnius really is, but when they come here, everyone falls in love with [the city],” said Go Vilnius’ Jurgis Ramanauskas, one of the people behind the idea. “When you formulate an idea that there’s a place which nobody knows but when they find it, everyone is very happy, the G-spot naturally popped up,” he said.
But the tongue-in-cheek campaign hasn’t been without its critics, with Vilnius officials coming under pressure to delay the rollout until the end of September — after Pope Francis’ long-awaited visit to the country. Povilas Poderskis, administrative director for the Vilnius Municipality, publicly rejected the calls last week, claiming that the ad was by far “the best advertisement of Vilnius for the international market.”
The ad campaign will be rolled out starting in London and Berlin this Thursday.
