A new exhibition displaying rarely-seen works from Hungarian artists who pioneered the neo-avant-garde from behind the Iron Curtain is opening in London.
Bookmarks – Revisiting Hungarian art of the 1960s and 1970s will show 70 emblematic works by 35 artists including Katalin Ladik, Dóra Maurer, and István Nádler.
Curated by Hungarian-born András Szántó, the show will journey from the abstract endeavours of the late 1960s to the conceptual and experimental work of the 1970s.
Created together with three leading Budapest galleries – acb, Kisterem and Vintage — the exhibition is the fourth in the Bookmarks series. These collaborative shows have been organised since 2013 to raise awareness of socialist Hungarian artists, many of which curators believe never gained the recognition they deserved due to the political wranglings of the Cold War.
Bookmarks – Revisiting Hungarian art of the 1960s and 1970s will be showing at The Vinyl Factory, Soho, as part of London’s Freize Week between 4 October and 14 October. The show will be open 10am – 6pm between 5 October and 7 October, 12pm – 6pm between 8 October and13 October, and 12pm – 6pm on 14 October.
