Watch modernist art and rural churches collide in the latest work from Danila Tkachenko

Moscow-based artist Danila Tkachenko blends fact and fiction as part of his latest work to explore the boundaries of historical memory.

His new series, Monuments, photographs crumbling religious buildings together with the bold, geometric shapes of Soviet modernism.

Rather than use CGI, Tkachenko erected lightweight structures to create each shape on film. The abstract shapes were designed to transform historical ruins into contemporary sites — imitating the way in which idealistic movements repurpose history.

“Every single one of us is individually inclined to exploit images of the past to meet our current needs or future goals,” says Tkachenko.

All of the structures were dismantled after shooting, disintegrating much like the crumbling churches themselves.
