Kyiv Photo Book Fair is back and more international than ever

The Kyiv Photo Book International Festival is set to return less than a year after first stepping onto the global art stage.

The festival will be held in the Ukrainian capital on 15 September 2019, eight months after the event’s inaugural edition in February this year.

The fair, which aims to promote the country’s art photography scene and boost intercultural exchange, is also ramping up the international participation, with visiting photographers from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Georgia, Singapore and elsewhere.

Among the works on show is Charles Fox’s Buried, telling the story of one family who survived Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge with the tender use of archive photographs. Ukrainian project, Maria, which sees artist Lesia Maruschak memorialise the Holodomor, and Sandra Jordan’s U N I T, celebrating the beauty of non-conformist architecture, will also be on display.

A number of zines and photo books have also been released from private collections for the event, including rare editions from individual collectors and Ukrainian institutions.

They include back issues of Ukraine’s iconic Nash magazine, providing almost the only platform for modern Ukrainian photography from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. Most issues are now in the hands of private collectors.
