Duel is a blend of music, light and movement, all pushed onwards by a singular driving force: conflict.
Created by six-piece St Petersburg art collective VOLNA, the installation touches the uncompromising duality of undiluted white and black.
Stretching across 30 metres of a former city factory, the artwork itself uses 16 discs, each with a light and dark side, which best resemble a coin which has just been flipped in the air. The discs’ movement through the air creates a choreographed dance between two interconnected opposites: light and shadow.
“Eighty percent of our art is darkness,” the team says. “We always start out with a black page or a dark space. Then we release light onto it, creating an image. [Light installations] entertain the public, but for us they are always serious artistic challenges.”
