The Calvert Journal is holding a special, one-off event uncovering one of the UK’s most contentious battlegrounds: European identity amid the Brexit referendum.

A dynamic panel discussion at London’s Shoreditch Treehouse on Monday 2 September will explore Eastern European photography in the context of the continent’s current turmoil.

Liza Premiyak, Managing Editor of The Calvert Journal, will moderate a conversation between photographers Tereza Červeňová (Slovakia), Maria Babikova (Russia), and Olivia Jankowska (Poland) — whose recent works explore post-Brexit Britain and Russia’s drag scene — and Anastasiia Fedorova, writer and curator of Post-Soviet Visions: image and identity in the new Eastern Europe.

At a time when news feeds are dominated by polarising topics such as the rise of populism and the refugee crisis, the group will discuss photography’s unique role in creating and bridging communities across Eastern and Western Europe and the UK. They’ll tackle issues such as marginalised groups and their role in national identity, and what the émigré experience can teach others about our preconceptions of East and West.

The event, which is part of Futures Photography — a project co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe Programme — is free and welcomes professionals, students, and enthusiasts alike, although an RSVP is required.
