Estonia’s latest art centre is opening in secret Imperial Russian submarine plant

Estonia’s latest international contemporary art centre has opened its doors in a former submarine plant in Tallinn. Founded and run by the Estonian Contemporary Art Development Centre, Kai — which means “dock” in Estonian — is a collaboration with the Estonian Soprus Cinema, the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, and the Whitechapel Gallery in London, and is hoped to galvanise the local art community.

Renovated by a female-led duo KAOS Architects, the industrial limestone building opened with the international group show Let the field of your attention…. soften and spread out. The multimedia exhibition, which reflects on body and movement, is the first of four major exhibitions this year. The centre will also house educational projects, an international residency programme, a cinema, and an auditorium, as well as working space for local art organisations.
