Discover the best Russian art from the new millennium at this festival in Manchester

The UK’s first festival of Russian contemporary culture, New Russias 2020, is set to take place in Manchester between 7 - 9 February.

The event will give visitors a taste of the best Russian music, literature, documentaries and art created over the past decade.

There’ll also be the chance to see Moscow-based indie band Pompeya and hypnotic post-punk Motorama — a Rostov group previously compared to Joy Division.

Visual art lovers can also visit an exhibition by video and installation artist Ann Rotaenko and filmmaker Dimitri Venkov, whose work has recently been featured at major art festival Documenta 14 and on the indie film platform MUBI.

A number of works will also be on hand to revise Russia’s Soviet past. Filmmaker Sergei Kachkin will screen and hold a Q&A on his film, Perm 36 — a documentary interviewing gulag survivors — while author Elena Chizhova will speak about her novel The Time of Women: a story which follows the Siege of Leningrad and beyond through the eyes of three women in 1960s St Petersburg.
