Discover a new, daring generation of Russian queer creatives with the account @russian.queer.revolution.

Created by writer and curator Anastasiia Fedorova, @russian.queer.revolution features portraits, micro-interviews, and quotes by young musicians, photographers, designers, journalists, and directors, whose LGBTQI+ identities are integral parts of their creative work.

“As a queer Russian person myself, I haven’t seen many people like me represented in global culture. Somehow, Russianness and queerness are seen as mutually exclusive because of the country’s politics,” says Fedorova, who also works as Strategy and Partnerships’ Manager at The Calvert Journal. “I wanted to resolve this conflict for myself. I guess there’s no better way to find out what it means to be Russian and queer than to ask other queer Russian people – which I’m currently doing as part of this project.”

“When it comes to the Russian LGBTQ community, there is obviously huge pressure from the government and the public, lots of judgment and familial homophobia, and a lack of information on health – sexual, physical, and mental – for queer people. But in spite of all of this, I can feel the palpable creative power and courage that the new generation has – they’re really determined to live the life they want and support each other.”
