Georgian directors are sharing films online for free to make sure you stay home

Production company Parachute Films has launched a new online platform to make the best of Georgian cinema available to audiences worldwide.

With millions of people trapped at home amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the Tbilisi-based producers decided to start gathering films from award-winning and emerging Georgian filmmakers to share online for free. The list currently includes shorts, animated films, documentaries, and longer-form fiction films, and is set to increase everyday as more and more filmmakers join the initiative.

Among the highlights is Granny (2013), an animated short uncovering an alternative world in which a Georgian grandmother uses her sewing machine to provide the universe with electricity. Films such as The Winter Which Was Not There (2015), a drama following a man who fishes a statue from the depths of the Black Sea, and I’m Beso (2014), a coming-of-age film about a teenager who dreams of becoming a rapper, are also must-sees. For a light-hearted pick-me-up, watch Wake Man (2015): the story of 70-year-old Rezo who, tired from the food served in his old people’s home, decides to start attending strangers’ funerals just to stay for the traditional feast afterwards.
