#Drop33: protestors go online to oppose Hungary’s anti-trans bill

Demonstrators protesting planned anti-transgender legislation in Hungary are uniting online under the hashtag #Drop33.
The hashtag references section 33 of a new bill, which is due to appear in front of the Hungarian parliament later this week. The changes would see the state record individuals’ sex by birth, without allowing for it to be revised later on, effectively banning transgender people from being recognised before the law.
Activists from Hungary and around the world have protested the bill by filming themselves crushing a piece of paper with the number 33.
Amnesty International is among the international bodies who have also criticised the law, using the slogan “Tell Hungary that Trans Rights Are Human Rights.”
“According to international and regional human rights standards, transgender people should be able to obtain legal gender recognition through quick, accessible and transparent procedures and in accordance with their own perceptions of gender identity,” the group said in a statement.
