A project on motherhood by Russian photographer scoops first prize at 2020 Sony World Photography Awards
Russian photographer Maria Kokunova has won the first prize at the Sony World Photography Awards, in the Discovery category of the Professional competition.
Her winning series, The Cave, portrays her own experience of voluntary isolation and motherhood. Honest and evocative, Kokunova’s shots reflect the Platonic myth of the cave as a personal space for creativity.
Other Eastern European shortlisted photography includes Ukrainian Railroad Ladies, by Sasha Maslov, Six Hundred, by Fyodor Savintsev, Twilight, by Alexander Tatarenko, 2045, by Macin Płonka, Disorder, by Edward Kaprov, Yukon Survivors, by Marko Dimitrijevic, At the Pink Planet by Yevhen Samuchenko, Swimming by Mikhail Kapychka, Growing Knowledge, by Yelena Strokin, and Bigorexia, by Anton Dotsenko.
Now at its 13th edition, the competition is a long-standing partnership between Sony and the World Photography Organisation, aiming to amplify the voices and insights of established and emerging contemporary photographers. Announced on 8 June, the winners of the 2020 contest will have their work exhibited in a virtual exhibition.
