The Calvert Journal launches Curated: the ultimate guide to contemporary Russian art

4 August 2020

The Calvert Journal is launching a unique new English-language guide to Russian contemporary art: Russia Z Curated.

The project will create a vast database of hundreds of young Russian artists, accessible to both new and specialist audiences.

“Russia Z Curated will be equally helpful to those who are just discovering Russian contemporary art, and don’t know where to start, and for curators, collectors, and scholars,” said project manager Maria Muzdybaeva.

The team hopes that the project will help young artists get the recognition they deserve at the start of their careers. “It’s great to be able to feature Russian creatives via an international platform edited by an experienced team,” explained independent curator Elena Anosova, one of the project’s initiators.

New artworks will be constantly added to the project, with curators, art historians, and cultural experts all recommending new artistic voices to be featured. Among the experts giving their insight is Simon Mraz, Director of the Austrian Cultural Forum, and cultural attaché at the Austrian Embassy in Moscow. “It is very important to understand Russia as a cultural environment, as a ground of artistic creation, and as a home to stunning artists,” he told The Calvert Journal. “To give these artists a voice and make them known outside Russia matters very much.”
