Originally a graphic designer, Bucharest-based artist Dan Crețu has made a name for himself since 2015, thanks to a series of sarcastic collages mixing contemporary pop culture with classical art.
While some of his works have a more aesthetic take, others challenge current norms, such as the“war kills” warnings photoshopped onto cigarette packs, the curvy pre-historic figurine placed at the centre of Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, or the plastic trash surrounding the floating baby on Nirvana’s Nevermind album cover.
With minimalist compositions and careful editing, Crețu’s works employ subtle yet exact interventions for striking visual effects.
