Watch the Roma futurist play where cyber witches stop Brexit

A Roma futurist play about radical feminists that fight xenophobic governments through hacking is premiering online today at 6pm GMT, with English subtitles.

Romacen mixes incantations, hip hop music, and a futuristic aesthetic, with costumes inspired by both sci-fi and traditional Roma motifs. Produced by the Bucharest-based independent feminist Roma theatre Giuvlipen together with the Andrei Mureșanu Theatre in the central Romanian town of Sfântu Gheorghe, the play imagines a utopian group of migrant women living across Europe, who hack the computers of the continent’s nationalist strongmen.

The hypnotic production also engages with the history of the Roma people, from their loss of livelihood when craftmaking was made obsolete by industrialisation, all the way to the Holocaust. The play also projects a posthumanist future after the end of the Anthropocene, when human beings try to adapt to living with robots.

Romacen is part of the fourth edition of the international Roma Heroes Festival in Hungary. Running between 21 October – 9 December, the festival includes seven weekly online performances by teams from Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, Austria, and Germany.
