Kyiv-based DJ Nastia has travelled to Ukraine’s tallest mountain range in the latest episode of her series of audiovisual DJ sets.
From a forest glade surrounded by tree stumps, moss-covered trunks, and decaying piles of leaves, DJ Nastia’s immersive, livestreamed set draws viewers into the Carpathian landscape: an area of wild natural beauty that has been ravaged by unsupervised deforestation — with more than 800,000 sq km of trees disappearing in the past 15 years.
Carpathians is the latest episode of Scary Beautiful, a five-episode audiovisual music project by DJ Nastia and whiskey brand Ballantine’s to introduce techno-lovers to overlooked areas of outstanding or unconventional beauty, and their tragic stories of man-made disaster. In each video, Nastia plays an unreleased track from an emerging DJ that will later be released via her very own NECHTO label.
Starting November 2020, Nastia has released a 60-minute DJ set each week filmed in a remote location in Ukraine. Previously sets have taken place in a colossal Soviet-era military radar in Chernobyl’s exclusion zone at dusk, an abandoned coal mine in Oleksandriia, and Tarakanivsky Fort, an abandoned 18th-century military outpost in Western Ukraine.
