This dystopian electronica debut pays tribute to the power of nature

Lithuanian producer Deri Dako has released a debut album exploring the concept of technological dystopia.

Alternating eerie male voices and factory-like beats, the 13-track album takes its name, Plantago Major, from a variety of plantain, a weed traditionally used to heal wounds.

The video for lead track “Axon” was animated by Japanese multimedia artist AUJIK. After opening with shots of towering constructivist architecture acting as machines, the clip then witnesses how nature reclaims the planet from industrial destruction, with symbolic plantain plants overgrowing a spomenik-like concrete structure.

“Technological progress is accelerating every day. Imagine what will follow decades from now,” Dako told The Calvert Journal. “That’s the album’s starting point: artificial, mechanical space that is slowly reclaimed by nature. Plantago Major is a glimpse into our future. If the pace of progress isn’t regulated in the right way, we could end up with a scenario where we destroy everything and need to start from scratch. What can we do to avoid that?”
