Moldovan singer Yana Sericova has released her first EP, mixing indie sounds with tender vocals and a splash of humour.

Featuring three songs in Russian and one in English, Zemlya1 is a collab between Sericova, producer and guitarist Dmitrii Colesnicov, bassist Roman Bălțeanu, and keyboard player Igor Voronin.

“This is an album about simple things: some fairy tales, some joking, a little sadness, and 100 per cent honesty,” says Sericova, who also works as a visual artist. Among her influences, Sericova names Russian rock singer-songwriter Zemfira, calling herself “her biggest fan in Moldova”.

The descriptions of her songs also take on a heartfelt, spiritual tone : “Princesses from my favourite fairy tales sing for the birds, and we decided to sing with them,” she says of Birdies, a collaboration with Colesnicov’s indie local band Dim the Light. “They just could not ignore the beautiful poem that is the vastness of the internet,” she adds.

Elsewhere, she describes her song How Things Are On Earth as being about “simple life cycles, human stupidity and wisdom, muck and joy,” to finally proclaim, “Thank you, Earth!”

You can buy the album on Bandcamp, listen to it on Spotify, or Youtube.
