Russian artist Gregory Orekhov’s futuristic, egg-shaped retreat is designed to shield inhabitants from the outside world.
With its smooth, glossy surface, curving shape, glass door, and transparent staircase, Ovoid’s aesthetic could be taken from a sci-fi blockbuster — but the structure was actually designed as a playhouse for Orekhov’s young daughter.
“This project came into being at the request of my daughter, Agatha,” the sculptor said on his Instagram account. “She dreamt of her own outdoor playhouse, yet all the classic options seemed dull or inappropriate. Then I got the idea to create a four-faced, oval-shaped house.”
Yet, with its minimalist design involving a white bench, desk, and chair, and little space available, the result ended up as a studio for kids and adults alike, rather than a children’s playhouse. “Ovoid is a personal haven for people of all ages, as we all seek isolation from time to time,” Orekhov explained.
