G20 photography exhibition goes on show in St Petersburg

A exhibition featuring the work of photographers from the G20 countries is currently on show in St Petersburg to coincide with the summit of world leaders in the city this week. The week-long exhibition, The Russian Moment, looks at different facets of Russian life and history.

While Russian photographer Vladimir Vyatkin shows Russia through the lens of a chess tournament in Kazan, Argentinian Alejandro Kirchuk tells the story of a diver who makes his living by selling sea cucumbers. Also on display is the work of British duo Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, recent winners of the Deutsche Börse prize, who have created a series of images using facial recognition technology.

Another photographer, Jodi Biber from South Africa, focused on the condition of women in the city of Ivanovo, 250km south of Moscow. In an interview with state news agency RIA Novosti, organisers of the exhibition, she said: “When I received the opportunity to choose a project for Expedition G20, I thought this was the perfect time to explore the social and psychological reasons behind the miniskirt and the role women feel they play in Russian society.” The exhibition runs until 7 September at various locations including the State Hermitage Museum and the Anna Akhmatova Museum.
