Exhibition exploring identity and culture opens in Dagestan

7 October 2013

An exhibition about culture and identity by celebrated artist Taus Makhacheva has opened in Makhachkala, the capital of the Russian republic of Dagestan. Through a series of photographs, videos and installation art, Story Demands To Be Continued explores the modern Caucasus, including issues of cultural continuity and the formation of ethnic identities.

The show includes new artworks alongside some of Makhacheva’s best-known pieces such as The Fast and The Furious (2011). The five-minute film looks at the culture of illegal street racing in Dagestan as a way of thinking about the impact of visual media on contemporary society. Makhacheva, who was shortlisted for the Kandinsky Art Prize in 2011, has participated in a number of Russian and international exhibitions including the 4th Moscow Biennale (2011) and the Liverpool Biennial (2012). History Requires Continuity is showing at the Exhibition Hall of the Artists’ Union in Makhachkhala until 7 November.
