When Studio 54 opened in New York in 1977 it rapidly became the most famous nightclub in the US, frequented by the likes of Grace Jones, Cher and Andy Warhol. Now, a new exhibition featuring work by Russian photographer Alexander Borodulin depicts New York nightlife from the late Seventies to early Eighties has gone on show at the Nailya Alexander Gallery in New York.
The son of well-known Soviet sports photographer Lev Borodulin, Alexander moved to New York in 1974 to take up a job with Time-Life publishers. As the youngest photographer ever to work for the company, Alexander soon befriended renowned photojournalist such as Alfred Eisenstaedt, Arthur Rothstein and Cornell Capa.
Alongside nightlife shots, the exhibition includes photographs of Brighton Beach and Coney Island as well as some of his fashion features. There are also several photographs of Alexander and his girlfriend Gia Carangi at Studio 54. Alexander’s photographs have been widely published in magazines including L’Official, Time, Marie Claire and many more. The exhibition Alexander Borodulin: New York 1970s-1980s runs at the Nailya Alexander Gallery until 8 March.
