A new exhibition featuring the works of Russian painter Nicholas Roerich has recently opened in Saratov’s State Art Museum to mark the 140th anniversary of the artist’s birth. Over 50 paintings from Roerich and one by his son, the artist Svetoslav Roerich, are on display, with photographs and video material also featuring in the exhibition.

Entitled Himalayas, the exhibition displays paintings inspired by Roerich’s travels through Asia between 1924 and 1928. The paintings in the series are noted for their vibrant use of colour.

A spokesperson from the Saratov State Art Museum Ekaterina Kapranova talked to The Calvert Journal about the local significance of the exhibition. “It’s such an important exhibition because it comes from Moscow, not Saratov,” said Kapranova. “It’s rare to have an exhibition of this calibre here, and, moreover, it’s great for us because lots of people from Saratov who can’t necessarily go to Moscow can see some of Roerich’s paintings in their home town.”

In addition to a legacy of paintings, Roerich is known for his contributions to science, poetry and the protection of historical and cultural monuments. The exhibition is part of a joint project between Saratov State Art Museum and the International Centre of the Roerichs in Moscow and will run until 15 June.
