Winners of an open design competition will have a say over the design of the Nizhnye Mnyovniki and Terekhovo metro stations, which will be built as part of the upcoming expansion of the Moscow Metro.

The competition is being organised by architecture and urban planning consultants KB Strelka, on the request of Mosinzhproekt, the engineering company undertaking the construction of all the new metro stations.

In the first stage of the contest, the jury will consider each of the applications and choose ten winners. These ten participants will take part in the development of the project documentation for the underground stations. International entrants are welcome to take part in the contest.

Entrants should offer their own architectural and artistic design for the interiors of the passenger areas and entrance halls of the Nizhnye Mnyovniki and Terekhovo stations, including details such as lighting, materials and furniture. The most important condition is that the contestants must avoid imitating historical styles and submit designs that “are original, modern and respond to global trends in architecture”.

By 2020 a total of more than 160km of track and 78 new metro stations, of which 15 are already open, are set to be added to the Moscow Metro.
