Discussions underway to open Serbia’s first Museum of Jazz in Belgrade

A proposed museum to showcase the city’s jazz heritage is being planned in Belgrade.

The museum would display highlights from the personal collection of legendary jazz musician Miša Blam, including photographs, instruments and video and sound recordings. The proposed location, on the central Knez Mihailova Street, would also host live performances.

Miroslav Tasić, the President of Belgrade’s Committee for Housing Heritage, has announced that his organisation has been negotiating for several months to secure the opening of a Museum of Jazz.

Mr Tasić stated that the relevant documents had already been filed at the Belgrade City Directory of Investment, and that he was confident of a “very quick” resolution in favour of a new and “active” museum.

The museum is also intended as a memorial to a lost generation of Jewish artists in the city. Jazz in interwar Serbia was predominantly the preserve of the Jewish community, including Miša Blam and his father Rafael.

The proposed Museum would open in late 2016.
