Great Amber concert hall to open in Latvian city of Liepāja

21 October 2015

The Great Amber concert hall is set to open on 6 November in the Latvian port city of Liepāja.

The concert hall will be opened with an inaugural concert, featuring the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra and the State Academic Choir “Latvija”.

The Great Amber hall is one of the biggest concert halls in the Baltic region, and its architecture is the result of an international design competition, won by Austrian architect Professor Volker Giencke and organised by the head of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, the Liepāja City Council and the Latvian Association of Architects. Construction began in Autumn 2013. The shape and façade of the building is intended to evoke visual associations with pieces of amber that wash up on the shore in Liepāja.

The Chamber Hall, a smaller concert hall within the building, has already been opened with a series of three concerts.
