Moscow is set to host its first international “Christmas Light” festival, bringing light and art installations to a range of locations around the Russian capital this winter.

Teams from Russia, Spain, Italy and France are due to take part, with pieces of particular note including a light tunnel on Nikolskaya Street and an installation entitled “Starry Sky” above Kamergersky Pereulok, both in the centre of the city.

The light festival coincides with another city-wide festival, “Journey to Christmas”, which will see Christmas markets and festive decorations appear at 38 locations around Moscow. Although the festivals are not linked, “Christmas Light” installations will appear at some of these sites.

“It’s important that what we do is the best in Europe. The events will take place from morning until evening. Parks, public spaces and pedestrian areas will be decorated,” said the Head of the Department for Multicultural Policy, Interregional Cooperation and Tourism, Vladimir Chernikov. He also stated that “Moscow has entered the global event calendar”.
