Ali and Nino, a film based on the novel of the same name by an Azerbaijani writer, is set to premiere at the world-renowned Sundance Film Festival in January.
Kurban Said’s novel tells the love story of a Muslim Azerbaijani boy and Christian Georgian girl in Baku from 1918 to 1920. Featuring an international cast, with the main roles played by Spanish actress Maria Valverde and Palestinian actor Adam Bakri, Ali and Nino was filmed in Azerbaijan from February to June of this year.
The film’s executive producer is vice-president of the Azerbaijani charitable Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Leyla Aliyeva, while it was written by British screenwriter Christopher Hampton and directed by British filmmaker Asif Kapadia.
The Sundance Film Festival 2016 will take place from 21 – 31 January in Utah, USA. Held since 1985, it is the largest independent film festival in the United States.
