The Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre is set to officially reopen on 30 January, after six years of renovation works.

Situated on Freedom Square in the centre of the Georgian capital, the iconic theatre will celebrate the end of the renovations with a programme of updated and restored opera and ballet productions.

The programme will include an renewed version of Abesalom and Eteri, the Georgian opera that customarily opens the venue’s annual seasons, directed by Gizo Jordania. The updated production will see the cast donning costumes created by Georgian traditional clothing manufacturers Samoseli Pirveli.

While the theatre has retained its look, the renovations have been wide-reaching, with upgrades to the building including a new roof, strengthened foundations, a wider orchestra pit and the addition of extra exhibition space.
