Moscow parliament considers naming street after Hugo Chavez

Not to be outdone by government officials sending their condolences to Venezuela in the wake of Hugo Chavez’s death, Vladimir Platonov, chairman of the Moscow parliament, today mooted the idea of naming a street in the capital after the socialist leader.

Earlier in the day, Communist Party MPs pushed for streets in a number of cities to be named after Chavez, including in Moscow. Echoing their calls, Platonov said: “We had good relations with Chavez and Venezuela. He is a man worthy of a Moscow street. This is my personal opinion and now it is a question of the law.”

Chavez, who led Venezuela for 14 years, died in hospital on Tuesday, after losing his battle with cancer.
