A musical adaptation based on the 1997 20th Century Fox animation Anastasia is set to hit Broadway next season.

Inspired by the legend surrounding Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova, daughter of the last tsar of Russia, the musical version follows Anastasia from St Petersburg to Paris in search of her long-lost family.

The show will begin a run at Hartford Stage in Hartford, Connecticut, from 12 May and will continue until 19 June. While no exact dates have been given yet, the show’s producers have revealed plans to stage the show on Broadway in New York during the 2016—17 season at a Shubert theatre.

The team behind the musical are playwright Terrence McNally, composer Stephen Flaherty and lyricist Lynn Ahrens, who won Tony Awards for their work on Ragtime in 1998. Songs written by Ahrens and Flaherty for the film will feature in the show.
