A meeting by ambassadors from Austria, Germany, the US, the UK, Norway and the Netherlands to Croatia last week to discuss media freedom in the country has sparked interest in the issue among local press.
While there was no press release issued, some of the diplomats mentioned the meeting on social media.
“Just had a very interesting meeting with colleagues and friends on media freedom,” said the meeting’s host, Austrian Ambassador Andreas Wiedenhoff, on social media, adding that the issue of media freedom represents “a key priority” in Austrian foreign policy.
Many local press outlets interpreted the gathering as indicative of growing western concern over media freedom in Croatia.
“Diplomats send a message to the government: ‘We will keep watching what is happening in Croatia,’” Croatia’s daily newspaper Večernji List (Evening Paper) reported on Sunday.
