Russia’s first virtual reality exhibition opens

Russia’s first virtual reality exhibition, Metaforms, opened last week in Moscow.

Graffiti artists, digital artists and illustrators participated in producing the exhibition, which is taking place at the city’s MARS centre and opened on 21 April.

The work of these artists is broadcast in two parallel realities — the virtual world on the Samsung Gear VR virtual reality headset and the real world within the MARS centre.

“Such immersion will allow visitors to feel like the artist in the process of creating art. They will be able to see through his eyes, to keep track of his choice of tools and brushes,” said the project’s organisers.

The artists have filled the exhibit’s rooms not only with graffiti, but with a range of work including paintings, sculptures and installations.

“For a long time I’ve wanted to do a project based on virtual reality, and as a producer of digital art projects I had the idea to bring together artists and virtual reality. What is more, no similar project has been done in Russia [...],” the exhibition’s producer, Dimitry Znamensky, commented.

Metaforms will run at the MARS centre in Moscow until 31 August.
