The seven proposals shortlisted for the design of the Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art in Riga have been unveiled.
The seven international firms chosen are Adjaye Associates, Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects, Caruso St John Architects, Henning Larsen Architects, Neutelings Riedijk Architects, Sauerbruch Hutton and wHY, each of which will team up with at least one local Latvian studio for the project.
Riga’s upcoming Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art is due to open in 2021 and has a price tag of US$34.1 million. Set to showcase a wide range of contemporary art both from Latvia and the wider Baltic region, the museum aims to become the “most-visited art museum in the Baltic states”.
According to the Latvian Minister for Culture, Dace Melbārde, the museum will be a catalyst for change in the country.
“It is a source of pride that we can experience the first example in Latvia’s history of cultural patronage on such a scale,” he noted.
