Jewish Film Festival opens in Moscow

The Moscow Jewish Film Festival opens today, bringing more than 35 films with a focus on Jewish culture to the Russian capital.

Now in its second edition, the festival is set to host screenings covering a range of different genres, from features, documentaries and shorts to animated films, focusing on topics such as daily life in Israel, 20th century Jewish history and the Jewish diaspora. Key films include Son of Saul (2015, dir. László Nemes), which won Best Foreign Language Film at this year’s Oscars and Natalie Portman’s directing debut, A Tale of Love and Darkness (2015).

The screenings will take place at a host of Moscow’s prime cultural venues, such as the Centre of Documentary Film, GUM and the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Centre. They will be accompanied by a programme of lectures, workshops and discussions, such as round table discussions and talks with directors and actors including Geza Rohrig, David Novack and Maria Kravtsenko.

A jury, made up of both film professionals and figures in the Jewish community, will award prizes for best documentary, best feature film and best short film.
