Los Angeles startup Hyperloop One has signed an agreement with a Russian investment company to bring its 760mph tube-based travel system to the Moscow public transport network.
The memorandum of understanding between the startup and the Summa Investment Group was signed at the St Petersburg Economic Forum two days ago with the approval of the Russian government.
Hyperloop has been pioneered in California by tech magnate and inventor Elon Musk, who plans to enable 35-minute journeys between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
The innovation could revolutionise public transport in Moscow, which already has one of the largest metro systems in the world and roughly 16 million inhabitants, many of whom live in distant suburbs.
With its vast landmass, Russia could also play a pivotal role in a global “cargo Hyperloop” that according to the startup would enable freight containers to be delivered “from China to Europe in a day”.
