Armenia’s first “Little Free Library” has been installed in the country’s capital, Yerevan.
It was the first of 15 libraries to be installed in a project titled Little Free Libraries in Armenia, which sets up mini outdoor libraries at spots across the country that are open for people to donate to or take from. The free libraries accept books in all languages, but are particularly seeking books in Armenian.
The aim of the project is to increase public access to books and information. It is funded by Birthright Armenia, while the libraries themselves were built by Yerevan architecture studio Four Peaks Landscape + Architecture.
“We want people to start reading more, to get involved in community projects such as this one, and to have free access to information. This library belongs to the community, and we hope that the community takes care of it, keeps filling it with books, and really values what it represents,” said Laurie Alvandian, one of the Birthright Armenia alumni who initiated the project.
