Sarajevo taxi drivers honour Robert De Niro

16 August 2016

Taxi drivers in the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo, have been paying tribute to Hollywood actor and producer Robert De Niro in honour of his visit to the city for the Sarajevo Film Festival.

Around 300 taxi drivers displayed posters of De Niro on their vehicles, many of which showed the star in his role as Travis Bickle in the 1976 film Taxi Driver (dir. Martin Scorsese).

“Many of our colleagues became taxi drivers after being retired from the Bosnian army and in a sign of gratitude and compassion with the main character we have decided to stage him a warm welcome in this way,” Hasib Lošić of the Sarajevo Taxi Association told the Reuters news agency.

De Niro opened the Sarajevo Film Festival on Friday with a screening of Taxi Driver, digitally restored for its 40th anniversary. The star also received the Festival’s lifetime achievement award, the first to be presented since its inception in 1995.
